Kalle Beck: Nevada’s Strongest Man recap

Written by
Yup you could call me dumb sometimes back to back contests are usually a bad idea. Especially when the previous one was a 2 day Plat+ Sometimes being dumb is fun though and I had a lot of fun the last 2 weeks! I was planning on going up to Reno as it was supposed to be in conjunction with Americas Strongest Man and I really wanted to watch that and it being only a 5 hour drive I really had no excuse. When the promoter fell through and screwed everyone over it made a lot more sense not to go but I wanted to support Gary Monotya in his first contest he was promoting and have a fun stress free contest where nothing was really on the line. Training for Dallas and Nationals with very similar events it would end up being 20+ weeks of damn near the same event training which I am sure would drive me crazy so doing some stuff I haven’t done in awhile would break it up before going into 10 weeks of nationals prep. Convinced Heavyweight Evan Hansmann to drive up with me and compete on Wednesday, so got off work drove to pick him up and with Friday traffic ended up getting into the hotel parking lot at 11:55PM After much much bullshitting. Took forever to check in got the brilliant idea to set up room service to be delivered at 7AM as we would have to be at the contest by around 8:30 the next day. Egg/ham skillet with gravy on top? Perfect! Oh the room was fancy too!

Took a melatonin to try to sleep and forgot i needed something from the car and walked around lost in the parking lot for about 30 minutes. The Grand Sierra is huge and I will never took sleep aids and walk around in public again. Sleep by about 3AM who needs it right? room service and a whole pot of coffee. Funny when we get woken up and it gets brought in to a room with me and Evan shirtless in our boxers. I think he was worried why one bed was still completely made. (OH jokes!) Get to the venue. Oh hey! How are you! Nice to meet you! ready to kill it! Yeah i am brother! you look jacked bro! How was Dallas? wtf happened? doing nationals? Put a shirt on! fist bumpx a million. Bunch of conversations like that. First event tire flip 650 tirex5 800×3 Haven’t flipped a tire since prepping for California’s Strongest Man which we haven’t even done, I felt like I did it pretty fast but was a bit conservative and got 4th of 4th whatever

Event two Last Man standing deadlift. This is what I was looking forward to! I haven’t went over 455 in months on the deadlift all my comps have been lighter weights for reps. I had a good feeling about this….. basically they have set jumps once you jump in you keep hitting it till your the last person going Went 405,455,500 which felt like a speed pull! I KNEW i had it here. then 550 which felt like I could pull it for 3-5 (most i have ever pulled is 565) and a big jump to 600! I’ve been chasing 6 for 3 years i always get stuck in the mid 5’s. I paced back and forth growling like i do getting my mind right telling myself I can do anything and no one else can do what I can. Big hit of Nose Tork strap up, get tight and PULL! it flew up! had a little shakey shake once it got past my knees but this was by far the easiest fastest pr attempt of my life. Damn it felt good.

Took a crack at 620 but already had the win, felt my lower back hating me and I have Nationls in 10 weeks so i decided to save it for another day.

3rd event truck pull

Felt good on the start, needed to take shorter chopper starts, got some slack on the rope and finished around 32 seconds for third? Haven’t pulled a truck since 09….. I’m really getting tired of being slow haha 4th event 200lb 12″ log press clean once This log felt real awkward! i don’t think it is balanced correctly as even at 200 it wanted to roll your wrists forward every time at the top. I still felt good about this and wanted to put up 12-15. with a easier log and not being the 4th event right after a truck pull 15-20 was the goal. got a good rythem and banged out 10. legs started to go but still got 2 more. Had 15 seconds left and my legs just would not support me. 1st place. 2nd got 10 and hit the same wall at 45 seconds.

5th event Atlas Stones 250 stone over 48″ yoke bar for reps Other than the light stone shoulder at the fit expo I haven’t trained them in months. Got my Spartan Sleeves put on (much to the disgust of old school Scott Brengal) and tied so tight my hands were turning blue. Thanks Rachael! Other than my first and last rep i 1motioned all of them and it felt good! I was a bit tentative and hit 9 reps. This was by far the best I ever felt on stones and with training them again I am really looking forward to this event at nationals! I really wish i just went at it now but I was trying to treat this contest as more of a training day and leave this comp unscathed for nationals. 2nd place on this event and 2nd place overall….. got a sword and 5lb tub of protein powder. Had a blast! so much fun to be around old and new faces. It was just a really fun weekend and helped me get over the disappointment of Dallas and get my mind right for Nationals. Very Very glad I did it on a whim
